My friend's band Ambitious Outsiders are no more :(
However, once they have a new drummer, they'll be back ...as "Viva Morrissey" and I'll no doubt be boring you all with their news / gigs etc once again!

Here's Paul's Myspace blog, explaining the name change -

A tearful farewell to 'Ambitious Outsiders'...
Category: Life
I give in.

After more than two years of futile struggle, it has become painfully apparent that, by choosing the name 'Ambitious Outsiders', I made everything a hundred times more difficult than it otherwise might have been, both in terms of getting opportunities to play live, and then getting people along to our concerts.

Hardly anyone, outside of Morrissey's most fervent admirers, connected the name 'Ambitious Outsiders' with Morrissey, so we've been, pretty much, treated as though we were one of the hundreds of unsigned and unknown bands that don't attract much attention outside of their friends and families, rather than the world's only tribute to the present-day Morrissey, which, theoretically, should attract the attention of anyone who has ever enjoyed a Smiths or Morrissey record/CD.

The name 'Ambitious Outsiders' on a poster, or in gig listings, left most people with no idea who we were or what we did, which made it much more difficult to entice people out to see us, and when we're relying on door takings to pay our expenses, this has meant we've often been left out of pocket, and it's ended up costing us money to play after fuel, accommodation, etc., has been paid for.

I certainly never started this band to get rich, I just wanted to go out and sing these fantastic songs to other people who might like them too. That struck me as something I might enjoy doing.
It then fell to me to find like-minded musicians. Founder members Adam, guitar, and Nigel, keyboards, along with Tom our bassist, have loved The Smiths/Morrissey for many years, and have never given anything less than 100% to the band, and always understood that it was gonna take time to establish ourselves, and gain a solid reputation, and have been happy to invest their time, energy, and a little money, simply because, like me, they enjoy playing the songs to people.

I wasn't quite so fortunate when it came to others who've passed through the band, but the least said about them the better.

Many of the musicians that play in tribute or cover bands are, by and large, only doing it for the money, and would play anything as long as the price was right. I know this to be true, because each time I've had to advertise for new band members, most of the people who answer my ads are only interested in how much they'll be paid per gig, and how often we'll be playing (which means how often they'll be getting paid).

So, Plan A didn't work, such as it was, on to Plan B!

Which is, to rename the band, and then find a new drummer, and lead guitarist, who can play the songs, want to be in the band because they think it might be fun, and are content with an equal share of whatever money comes along, however much that may be. That shouldn't be too difficult, should it?

Oh yeah, the new name for the band is.... VIVA MORRISSEY, which was the least cringeworthy name of those we considered that contained Morrissey's name...

Oh well, we'll all soon be dead, so what does it matter.

There's a nice interview here too:

Paul's not having much joy getting the band sorted is he? Shame as he's such a good bloke. Hope things work out for him and the rest of the band.

As many line-up issues and changes as the man himself. Perhaps it's a good sign?

Does he have a constant a la Boz???

Hope it is a good sign Rue! :)
Yes he does have a permanent guitarist - though Adam is less than half Boz's age... (and half the size!!)

Anyone remember the band Bradford?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradford_(band)

As I write, their guitarist is meeting with Paul and looks very much like he'll be joining Viva Morrissey...which is fantastic news! :-D

Yes Shirl, it turned out that he was actually the drummer from Bradford, who is a guitarist as well! He's really enthusiastic and Paul thinks he and the new drummer will be okay. They had a rehearsal all together yesterday which went well....so just need a bass player. Paul's hoping for a Manchester gig before Christmas, fingers crossed! :)

PS - Paul's meeting a very promising bass player this week, so that Christmas gig may well be on the cards! :-D

Woohoo! Full band now - including 2 ex-Bradford members! :-D
First real rehearsal tomorrow (assuming everyone survives the Morrissey show in Liverpool tonight!) and a few gigs already booked for early next year in Stockton, Poole and London! <<ROCK>>

Guys, what happened at the Morrissey show last night in Liverpool? It looks like it was cut short. Is he okay?

Yes, one complete idiot ruined what was looking to be a brilliant gig :( I don't think Moz was hurt by the glass, but I don't blame him for not coming back on stage. He must've been humiliated (and soaked!) and the lack of respect must hurt too. Hope the person responsible is regretting it today...if he survived!

Anyway there was a great after-show party at the Albert Docks, though drinks were extortionaly priced (£9.45 for a pint of Fosters and a small white wine?!!?) so all was not lost.

Sadly nobody thought to ask Paul to step in and continue the gig - he certainly looked the part last night and would've loved to! :) I lost count of the number of people asking for photos with him - really amusing to watch! :)

Bottles or glasses (even plastic) coming at you in the dark through the lights must be scary, so although a half filled plastic pint glass wouldn't hurt I guess he'd feel shocked but also embarrassed (which probably hurts more?) But why should the behaviour of one ruin a night for everyone; refunding ticket price doesn't really cut it- it was a week-end gig so I assume many would have travelled incurring expenses, hotel costs, etc.

No doubt the beer thrower is a dick, like every beer thrower at every gig (something I’ve never understood. It’s like they get so excited that they have to ejaculate their beverage in delight!?!), but I dare I suggest a slight over reaction. It does appear that Morrissey maybe isn't capable of lengthy tours or dates in close succession or is he simply looking for any excuse to cancel? A lot of fans seem to be less sympathetic as time moves along, even after his bout of ill health. I’ll be interested to see what happens next?
